Performance Appraisal

An employee’s job performance is evaluated in accordance with predetermined performance standards in a performance appraisal. The primary goal of a performance review is to give employees feedback on how well they did their jobs, point out areas where they could do better, and highlight areas where they excel. The decisions regarding promotions, pay raises, and opportunities for training and development are then based on this data.
Rating scales, behavioural observations, and 360-degree feedback are some of the methods that are utilized in performance appraisals. Rating scales commonly utilize a mathematical scale to rate employee performance on different occupation related measures. Employees are observed on the job and their performance is evaluated based on a set of predetermined behavioural indicators in behavioural observations. 360-degree input includes gathering feedback from different sources, including the worker, friends, subordinates, and administrators.
Organizations use performance appraisals to manage and enhance employee performance. They provide a foundation for evaluating the efficacy of performance improvement plans, encourage goal-setting and self-improvement, and assist in identifying the requirements for training and development. Performance evaluations can also contribute to the development of a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within an organization when carried out appropriately.
