Restricted Holiday

In India, the term “restricted holiday” (RH) refers to a holiday that an employee can choose to take based on their religious or cultural beliefs. An “optional holiday” or “personal holiday” are other names for RH. It is not the same as a holiday that all employees are required to observe, such as Gandhi Jayanti, Republic Day, or Independence Day.

Employees are given restricted holidays by their employers to allow them to observe religious holidays and celebrations that are not common among all employees. These vacations are granted in accordance with state and federal regulations. An employee can use an RH to celebrate any important festival or event that isn’t a public holiday but is important to them. Employers are not required to provide these holidays, and the number of RHs may fluctuate from state to state. However, providing RHs to employees is regarded as a good practice for promoting diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.

It is critical to take note of that RHs are not compulsory, and employees might choose to work on these days if they wish. An employee must inform their employer in advance and plan for their workload if they decide to take an RH. Depending on the policy of their employer, employees who work on RHs may be entitled to overtime pay or compensatory time off. Likewise, businesses might give extra advantages to employees who decide to work on RHs, for example, reward pay or extra vacation time.
